Located in the north of England and sitting between the cities of Liverpool and Leeds is the old Roman settlement we now know as Manchester. Manchester is a great place to visit if you are attending one of the many language schools London (more info here) has to offer, but want to get away from the city. Much like London, Manchester has an eclectic mixture of cultures and ethnicities, helping to make it a dynamic and interesting place.
The city is well known for its role as a historical location - also known as the 'second capital of the UK' - and its characteristic sports culture, and is a fantastic option for spending a weekend away from the bustling streets of London. You can take this opportunity to visit the city's many museums or enjoy the wealth of unique markets and festivals that Manchester sports throughout the year. Here are some of the many things you can choose to do before going back to hit the books at any of the English schools London offers.
Burn your wallet shopping at Trafford Centre
If you're looking to shop, you've found your Mecca. Built as a gargantuan complex located just out of town, most major brands can be found in this huge mall. Not everything is shopping at the Trafford Centre though - you can find plenty of entertainment in the form of cinemas, restaurants, golf driving ranges and much more. If you have a car, you can park for free in the massive car park. If you don't, you can easily reach the place using one of the many public transport links from the city.
Time for some far out Far East fun in Chinatown
Built around one of the largest Chinese populations in Europe, this area is truly a paradise for fans of all things Chinese. Recognised as one of the best Chinatowns worldwide, the wide array of restaurants is one of the main draws of this district, which is truly a feast for those who love a good meal. While you take a stroll through this magical place, make sure you enjoy the Chinese architecture and marvel at the sight of authentic Chinese archways liberally spread around the area.
Visit the Lowry, where the language schools London wish they could be
A really stunning locale, this is an arts and theatre complex that boasts rich entertainment options for any visitor. Besides housing a prolific theatre section, you can also visit the Imperial War Museum, as well as Manchester United's great Old Trafford stadium if you are a sports fan. After you are done touring the sights you can stay and enjoy the local cuisine at one of the many excellent bars and restaurants.
Discover the Imperial War Museum North, and its amazing exhibits
The museum greets you instantly with its angular looks and almost alienesque architecture, full of clean edges and smooth surfaces. The design of the building and its surroundings are purposely shocking, and succeed at providing a visual offensive that will leave most visitors estranged but allured at the same time. The War Museum features fascinating exhibitions and is free for anyone to enter. If you are at all interested in war history or have a knack for architecture, you can't miss this gem.
