The Metrolink trams run far more frequently and their routes much easier to navigate, though at the time of writing the routes are, compared to the bus system, somewhat sparse. Plans are underway for a comprehensive expansion, however, and within a year or two from the time of writing (July 2010) they will be far more pervasive.
Bus ticket prices are cheap, and increase for longer journeys. For a visitor, however, or someone planning a number of trips over the course of a day, day tickets are available which give you unlimited travel for a set price, currently at around 4 GBP. An even better deal are the family or group rate day tickets, which allow up to two adults and two children (under 16) the same options for about 7 GBP.
There are, however, a couple of drawbacks. As there are several different bus companies operating in Greater Manchester, several day tickets may have to be bought to access all areas of the city. There are other options for cross-company tickets that allow you to travel with the two major bus companies (Arriva and Stagecoach) on the same ticket, as well as options that additionally allow travel on trams and/or trains. You may also need to watch for options that disallow travel during what’s known as the “peak” period before 9.30am on weekdays.
